Taroko National Park is located in Hualien, Taichung and Nantou counties. It is the fourth national park established in Taiwan. Its predecessor was the Taroko National Park (1937-1945) established during the Japanese colonial period. Its scope is mainly in the Liwu River Gorge, along the East-West Cross-Island Highway and its surrounding mountainous areas, including the Hehuan Peaks, the Qilai Peaks, the Nanhu Central Jianshan Peaks, the Qingshui Cliff, the Liwu River Basin and the Sanzhan River Basin, etc., with a total area of 92,000 hectares.
Taroko National Park has high terrain, sloping roughly eastward from the Central Mountain Range. The mountains are undulating, and the mountainous area above 2,000 meters accounts for about half of the total area, of which nearly one-sixth is mountains above 3,000 meters. The mountains are majestic, and as many as 27 of them are among the "100 Peaks of Taiwan".
The rivers in the territory flow east-west with the backbone mountain range as the main watershed. On the east side is the Liwu River Basin, which covers an area of about two-thirds of the entire national park. The main stream runs through the middle of the park, and tributaries come from the west and north. The narrow area on the west side of the Ridge Mountain Range is the Nanhu River, Erwu River, Birlu River, etc. in the upper reaches of the Dajia River. Taroko National Park covers a metamorphic rock area formed by violent orogenic movement. The rock strata in the area run roughly from northeast to southwest. The park has steep mountains, deep canyons, and beautiful scenery, which is very unique.
